2027 AUTUMN in PARIS / DRAWING STUDIO

“What I have said here about drawing is but a summary of enlightening conversations I had about it with Mr. LeMoyne. I have supported the example of certain antiques, and of several of our own best teachers, and I thought it a duty to ‘join together the lights’ that nature was able to provide me. Nobody doubts that we should receive from a clever man the first lessons we need in the study of painting. The beautiful antique should be our second guide, and instruct us on the beautiful forms that it assembles. But soul and life are the first merit of a picture, and we cannot hold onto them save by this divine fire which characterizes living nature.”

– Discours sur le dessin, Donat Nonnotte (Lyon, 29 November 1754)
